Spiritual Seasonal Observances – Fall 2023

Warm Greetings to the Emerson Community,

As we embark on the new academic year, we are pleased to introduce this new email communication channel in celebration of diversity at Emerson College. We have deep pride and honor for the range of identities, lived experiences, languages, and nationalities that make up our community. This account will be used to share important information and events related to recognition days, heritage months, and spiritual seasonal observances. The content will be crafted by staff partnering across the Office of the President, Communications, the Social Justice Collaborative, Intercultural Student Affairs, Center for Spiritual Life, Student Accessibility Services, and Internationalization & Equity.

Included in these acknowledgments will be seasonal emails honoring faith and spiritual communities, including seekers, ethicists, and secular humanists.

The months of September through November contain important times of worship, celebration, and observance across many traditions, including: Birth of Muhammad, Mawlid-an-Nabi; Rosh Hashanah,Yom Kippur, and Sukkot; the Autumn Equinox; the Mid-Autumn Festival, Ganesh Chaturthi; Birth of the Báb and Birth of Bahá’u’lláh; Dussehra, All Saints’ Day; All Souls’ Day; and Diwali, among many others. Many of these holidays, like the autumn season itself, invite us into a reflective time of new beginnings, contemplation, release, and remembrance.

At Emerson, we not only wish to celebrate our diversity, but also honor it and to strengthen awareness of our multifaith, religious, and spiritual community members. As such, we are also pleased to share a new Multifaith Observance Google Calendar that can be synced to your personal account. The Multifaith Observance Google Calendar displays information on important religious and spiritual dates, as well as restrictions to note when planning campus events, course deadlines, meetings, or programs. The detailed spreadsheet list of these dates is also available at Multifaith Holidays through Academic Year 2027. This resource from the Center of Spiritual Life continues to provide vital information. Please remember that our Religious Observance Policy exists so that holidays can be recognized wholly by members of our community.

Autumn is a time of change, a liminal space, an opportunity to observe and learn from the natural world around us.

We wish all Emersonians good harvest, joy, and peace.
