In July 2015 the first official Disability Pride Day was celebrated in Boston to mark the 25th anniversary of the ADA, and the law recently received an update to include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.gov\/resources\/2024-03-08-web-rule\/\">web accessibility for state and local governments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 140%\">Disability Pride Month is an important time to celebrate our diverse and distinctive bodies and minds, all beautiful and worthy of dignity and respect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 140%\">Many of us have been socialized to think that disability is a word to avoid, but that fear is more reflective of ableist notions that persist to shame, stigmatize, medicalize, and dehumanize. Disability Pride is about reframing our understanding of disability as something that exists along a spectrum of human identity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 140%\">Acknowledging the physical and cognitive differences among our Emerson community members and having pride in our individuality means understanding how our culture, systems, and structures can limit access, and committing to deepening our support for <a href=\"https:\/\/rootedinrights.org\/stories\/blog\/topics\/accessibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/rootedinrights.org\/stories\/blog\/topics\/accessibility\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1720799704170000&amp;usg=AOvVaw33XcKfIhvbRt3apvIntoXf\">access needs<\/a> so that everyone can fully participate in any activity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 140%\">We value the talent and brilliance of our disabled and neurodivergent community members, and are invested in doing the work to continue to make shifts that better support the multiplicity of access needs among our students, staff, and faculty.
