This day is an annual time of remembrance honoring when enslaved Black people in Galveston Bay, Texas, were informed of their emancipation in 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 140%\">Juneteenth&#8217;s status as a nationally recognized holiday is due in part to the efforts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshistory.org\/education-resources\/biographies\/opal-lee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-u-link-value=\"eyJuYW1lIjoid2ViIiwiYXR0cnMiOnsiaHJlZiI6Int7aHJlZn19IiwidGFyZ2V0Ijoie3t0YXJnZXR9fSJ9LCJ2YWx1ZXMiOnsiaHJlZiI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LndvbWVuc2hpc3Rvcnkub3JnL2VkdWNhdGlvbi1yZXNvdXJjZXMvYmlvZ3JhcGhpZXMvb3BhbC1sZWUiLCJ0YXJnZXQiOiJfYmxhbmsifX0=\">Opal Lee<\/a>, who brought attention to the importance of Juneteenth by organizing a 1,400 mile walk from Texas to Washington D.C.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 140%\">Throughout the United States, cities and towns honor Juneteenth with festivals, gatherings, and opportunities to learn more about the history of people who were enslaved.
