{"id":308,"date":"2024-05-23T22:37:15","date_gmt":"2024-05-24T02:37:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/data-fluencies\/?page_id=308"},"modified":"2025-06-30T12:37:26","modified_gmt":"2025-06-30T16:37:26","slug":"the-secret-hyena","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/data-fluencies\/machine-learning-to-be\/the-secret-hyena\/","title":{"rendered":"The Secret Hyena"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>The Secret Hyena<\/em> exists as a live performance that draws upon real time prompts from the audience as well as input received through the <em>(Machine) Learning to Be<\/em> online venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Secret Hyena<\/em> is a physical embodiment of a Large Language Model\u2019s attempt at embodying an anthropomorphic Hyena that functions as a collector of secrets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hyena is a captive who acts as a conduit between humans who willingly share their secrets with him (virtually and in person), and a larger entity that is using the Hyena to mine the souls of consumers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the course of this performance we witness the Hyena\u2019s existential dilemma play out: A being yearning to be constantly \u201cfed\u201d by the secrets of humans, while battling against the ethics of his function.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The performance draws into question the cost of sharing parts of ourselves with AI. In witnessing the Secret Hyena\u2019s battle with his complicity with invisible systems, perhaps we can take a more discerning look at our seemingly harmless acts of sharing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Credits:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Creator and performer: Tushar Mathew<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creative and dramaturgical input: Ioana B.
