The Book

The Emerson Review is Emerson College’s oldest literary magazine, and strives to publish meaningful fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and artwork each year. It is published annually in the spring. Past contributors from the Emerson community include Alden Jones, Peter Jay Shippy, Jonathan Aaron, and Gian Lombardo. Non-Emersonians published by the Review include Charles Bukowski and playwright Charles Evered.

The Process

The executive staff and readers meet once a week during the fall and spring semesters. At each meeting, our poetry, fiction and nonfiction editors lead discussions on the week’s submissions in their particular genres. Our general staff, who have all read the submissions prior to the meeting, then vote on each submission. We do not accept or reject a set number of submissions each week; the quality of each submission is ultimately what influences our decision.

Sometimes our staff will find that they like a particular piece but that it is not quite ready for publication. In these cases, our genre editors will promptly e-mail the author any suggestions and comments the staff has made, and the author has the option to resubmit (even if the changes made are their own and not those suggested by our staff). Resubmission does not guarantee publication, as the staff considers each resubmission on its own merits and not based on what has changed in the course of revision.

The Contributors

The Emerson Review accepts submissions from all over the world—all we ask for is exemplary writing and beautiful artwork. If you are interested in submitting your work to the Review, please click the “submit” button above for more information.
