Let us help you choose your new neighborhood and help you explore one of Boston\u2019s best-located and beautiful neighborhoods: Jamaica Plain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Boston Neighborhoods JP_Long\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/577634639?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jamaica Plain Fun Facts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a plaque outside the local USPS building on Myrtle Street tells you, Jamaica Plain was once called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamaicaplainnews.com\/2018\/06\/26\/14-years-later-plaque-proclaiming-jp-as-eden-of-america-being-reinstalled-at-post-office\/50161\">\u201cEden of America\u201d<\/a> largely due to how green it is. The neighborhood is home to a large section of Boston\u2019s famous <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emerald_Necklace\">Emerald Necklace<\/a> and the great Jamaica Pond.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JP, as the locals call it, formed shortly after the founding of Boston in 1630, when a handful of farmers settled in. The name allegedly came from the farmers&#8217; participation in the sugar cane trade that produced Jamaican Rum. As these farmers set up for businesses, they increasingly attracted visitors from nearby Boston. By the early 1800\u2019s, JP had grown significantly and featured some of the most expensive real estate in the country at the time. It became officially incorporated into Boston in 1874.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In modern times, JP is one of the most diverse and progressive neighborhoods in the city. It\u2019s one of the preferred areas for Latinx immigrants, especially from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, with smaller Asian and Irish communities mixed in. JP is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heremagazine.com\/articles\/boston-lgbtq-guide\"> also considered \u201cGay Village,<\/a>\u201d in the vein of other neighborhoods like New York\u2019s Greenwich Village and Cape Cod\u2019s Provincetown, as it\u2019s one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly neighborhoods in Boston.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s 4.4 square miles, and as of last year, has a population of 44,151 residents, with a median age of 33 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our tour of JP is divided across the two main subway train stops: Jackson Square and Green Street.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jackson Square&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jackson Square sits on the border between JP, Mission Hill and Roxbury. The train station features a granite monolith, titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wescover.com\/p\/public-sculptures-by-christine-palamidessi-at-massachusetts-bay-transportation-authority--PH1o9eDJeL\">&#8220;Grandmothers,&#8221; which was written by artist Christine Palamidessi Moore <\/a>as an ethnic memoir, and was chosen by residents as a tribute to JP\u2019s diversity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/samadamsbostonbrewery\/?hl=en\">Sam Adams Brewery<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/grad-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2021\/08\/DSC02333-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"The outside of the Samuel Adams Brewery\" class=\"wp-image-1982\" width=\"487\" height=\"273\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Boston\u2019s unofficial, official beer, Sam Adams Brewery is located at 30 Germania Street. It boasts a large selection of home-brewed beers on tap, delicious foods, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samueladams.com\/brewerytours\">and even a tour through the facilities!<\/a> During your visit, you may even get to try some unreleased or in-the-works boozy concoctions!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brendanbehanjp.com\/\">Brendan Behan\u2019s Pub<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/grad-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2021\/08\/DSC02679-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"The outside of Brendar Behan's Pub\" class=\"wp-image-1983\" width=\"486\" height=\"237\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>A true neighborhood haunt, Brendan Behan\u2019s Pub is located in 378 Center Street. Named after the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brendan_Behan\">famous Irish poet,<\/a> it\u2019s one of the oldest pubs in JP, and prides itself on keeping the flame lit for the Irish heritage of the area. Though they don\u2019t serve food, they\u2019re perfectly cool with you bringing in your own or ordering delivery from near-by restaurants, in fact they encourage it. The pub offers cocktails, beers on tap, and hosts lively events including culinary events to live Irish music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nirarock.com\/\">Nira Rock Park<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/grad-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2021\/08\/DSC02702-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"A sign welcoming visitors to Nira Rock Park\" class=\"wp-image-1984\" width=\"487\" height=\"273\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>A self-proclaimed \u201csecluded haven right at the heart of the city,\u201d Nira Rock Park features an orchard where you can sample grapes, apples, plums, cherries and raspberries, a hilltop meadow, and above all, two bolted rock climbing routes. Yes, you read that right, this unique park allows you to rock climb in the middle of the city! Nira Rock was originally a quarry, and is now referred to as a \u201cpocket sanctuary\u201d for wildlife and is run and maintained by volunteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.gov\/parks\/franklin-park\">Franklin Park and Zoo<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/grad-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2021\/08\/DSC02364-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"An entrance sign listing the hours to the Franklin Park and Zoo in front of the entryway of the Park.\" class=\"wp-image-1985\" width=\"487\" height=\"273\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Franklin Park and Zoo sprawls across three neighborhoods including JP, Roxbury and Dorchester, and is about 527 acres. Partially wooded and paved, it is the largest park in the city of Boston. Due to its size, location, and beauty, it is considered the most important part of the Emerald Necklace, and the \u201ccrown jewel\u201d of the Emerald Necklace\u2019s architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, who finished building the park in 1860\u2019s. It was named after founding father Benjamin Franklin, and features walkways, ponds, stone bridges, picnic areas, and even a zoo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/grad-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2021\/08\/DSC02383-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Pedestrians walking through Franklin Park and Zoo admiring animal sculptures.\" class=\"wp-image-1991\" width=\"487\" height=\"273\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Built in 1912 to immediate success, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoonewengland.org\/franklin-park-zoo.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Franklin Park Zoo<\/a> welcomed 20 million visitors in 1920 alone. It features exotic animals like lions, tigers, pygmy hippos, Masai giraffes, budgerigars, Amur leopards, tapirs, western lowland gorillas, and Grevy&#8217;s zebras, containing a total of about 220 species in its exhibition. There\u2019s even kangaroos, emus and camels in their respective exhibits. It\u2019s the second-largest zoo in New England, after the Southwick&#8217;s Zoo in Mendon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tresgatosjp.com\/\">Tres Gatos<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/grad-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2021\/08\/DSC02421-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"An outdoor patio with dining chairs and umbrellas and a birdhouse. \" class=\"wp-image-1986\" width=\"487\" height=\"273\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Tres Gatos is a tiny tapas restaurant, bar, record store, <em>and <\/em>book store. Attend a local performance, or just enjoy a glass of wine in the garden. However, you decide to visit, be sure to bring a friend and try some different tapas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thevuinjp.com\/\">The Video Underground<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/grad-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2021\/08\/DSC02354-767x1024.jpg\" alt=\"The outside of The Video Underground Cinema Cafe.\" class=\"wp-image-1987\" width=\"505\" height=\"283\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Upon first glance, Video Underground looks like a neighborhood coffee shop offering an excellent selection of coffee, pastries, and smoothies. After further investigation, you might notice movie posters, racks of DVDs, VHSs, and even popcorn available for purchase. Video Underground\u2019s name isn\u2019t just for fun, but instead is quite literal. Not only does VU offer coffee and pastries, but they also <a href=\"https:\/\/thevuinjp.com\/vu-screening-room\/\">rent out a full-blown movie theater<\/a>, equipped to seat about 30 people. You can rent it for a group of friends, or host an actual event.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Green Street&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Green Street might be your typical subway stop if it didn\u2019t have a fully functioning art gallery. The gallery, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostoncyberarts.org\/\">\u201cBoston Cyberarts Gallery,\u201d<\/a> opened in 1998 under the direction of local artist James Hull. Currently, the gallery displays modern works emphasizing art and technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jplicks.com\/\">JP Licks<\/a>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/grad-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2021\/08\/DSC02491-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"An awning and entryway into JP Licks ice cream store\" class=\"wp-image-1988\" width=\"487\" height=\"273\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>One of the most popular ice cream shops in Boston, JP Licks, named after Jamaica Plain, opened in 1981. and currently has 16 locations in Boston. JP Licks is best known for its wide selection of homemade ice-creams, including raspberry, peach cream, coffee, vanilla, chocolate, cookies n\u2019 creme, and more. The shop doesn\u2019t shy away from nontraditional and offers flavors of the month that have included avocado, Tabasco, wasabi, and even Leprechaun Brew, a specialty flavor made with Sam Adams beer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deepthoughtsjp.com\/\">Deep Thoughts Record Store&nbsp;<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/grad-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2021\/08\/DSC02433-1024x707.jpg\" alt=\"The entryway to Deep Thoughts Record Store\" class=\"wp-image-1989\" width=\"487\" height=\"273\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Recognizable by its psychedelic yellow and cerulean blue facade, Deep Thoughts Record Store sells new, traded, old, and donated vinyls, CDs, cassettes, movies, stereo equipment and books. Open seven days a week, you can search through discount bins, separated by genre, and even attend events such as Grateful Dead Family Night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Honorable mentions:&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/elorientaldecuba.net\/homeE.html\">El Oriental de Cuba<\/a>, cuban-style restaurant.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/jpizlekitchen.com\/\">JPizzle Kitchen,<\/a> breakfast diner by day, Colombian restaurant by night.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.littledipperjp.com\/\">Little Dipper,<\/a> highly popular breakfast spot. Delicious pancakes.<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.casaverdejp.com\/\">Casa Verde,<\/a> Mexican bar, with some amazing tacos and drinks.&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/shopboomerangs.org\/\">Boomerang,<\/a> thrift store full of records, books, clothes and furniture.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/bostonlookingbackward.wordpress.com\/2011\/08\/05\/plath-home\/\">The House of Sylvia Plath<\/a>, oh not much, just the former home of one of the most important writers of the 20th century.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jphs.org\/victorian-era\/civil-war-monument-and-streets.html\">Soldier\u2019s Monument,<\/a> monument erected in honor of Union soldiers who came from Jamaica Plain.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Neighborhoods for Grad Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>JP is one of our favorite neighborhoods to recommend grad students to live in.
