According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2011\/05\/15\/is-college-worth-it\/\">2013 Pew Research study<\/a>, 69% of workers with a master\u2019s degree report being \u201cvery satisfied\u201d with their job, compared to 55% of college graduates, and just 40% of non-graduates.\u00a0So, is grad school worth it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll explore some of the reasons behind those post-grad numbers, but it\u2019s important to keep in mind that while job satisfaction, potential earnings, and even debt are helpful metrics when considering the value of grad school, they aren\u2019t the only (or even most significant!) ones. Most of your knowledge is gained in the classroom, where you\u2019re \u201cdownloading\u201d information from the instructor. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/education\/best-graduate-schools\/articles\/2019-02-15\/what-graduate-school-is-and-who-should-consider-attending\">grad school<\/a>, you\u2019ll still be learning in the classroom, but classes are tightly focused within your field of study, and much of your time outside class is dedicated to participating in or creating your own contributions to the field. Your undergrad is a great time to explore your potential interests, whereas grad school is the time to dig deep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve done your time as an undergrad and you&#8217;re confident about your career path or industry. But how can you be certain the time and money you\u2019re about to devote to grad school will be worth it? Let\u2019s look at some of those metrics:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/grad-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/02\/170707_Journalism-008-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"A journalism broadcasting room is set up with lights and a table and chairs for journalism students to practice in.\" class=\"wp-image-2082\" width=\"366\" height=\"548\" srcset=\"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/grad-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/02\/170707_Journalism-008-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/grad-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/02\/170707_Journalism-008-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/grad-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/02\/170707_Journalism-008-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/grad-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/02\/170707_Journalism-008-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/grad-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/02\/170707_Journalism-008-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/grad-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/02\/170707_Journalism-008-scaled.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 366px) 100vw, 366px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Employment Rates &amp; Job Satisfaction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Out of 171 respondents to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emerson.edu\/departments\/career-development-center\">Emerson\u2019s Career Development Center<\/a> survey, 74% of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emerson.edu\/departments\/career-development-center\/students\/outcomes\">class of 2020 graduate students<\/a> stated that they were satisfied with their current employment status and position \u2013 a bit higher than the 69% of satisfied graduates from Pew Research\u2019s 2013 national study \u2013 with 68% reporting that they were employed immediately after graduation, close to the overall 71% employment rate of those with advanced degrees, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/cps\/cpsaat07.htm\">the Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>\u2019 (BLS) 2021 data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Higher job satisfaction could also be the result of increased job security for those with advanced degrees. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/cps\/cpsaat07.htm\">BLS<\/a> reports a 2.4% unemployment rate for those with an advanced degree (higher than a bachelor\u2019s). Compare that to the 3.5% unemployment rate for those with only a bachelor\u2019s degree. A <a href=\"https:\/\/economix.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/02\/18\/does-education-make-you-happy\/?_php=true&amp;_type=blogs&amp;_php=true&amp;_type=blogs&amp;_r=2\">study from 2010<\/a> speculated the impact of higher education on overall happiness. The study also cited a strong 0.68 correlation between \u201chuman capital,\u201d (the share of the population with a bachelor\u2019s degree or higher) and happiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prospective Earnings Post Grad School\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall earnings for those with a graduate degree are also higher. BLS reports an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/careeroutlook\/2021\/data-on-display\/education-pays.htm\">annual salary around $88K<\/a> for those with a master\u2019s degree. Compare that to approximately $75K for those with a bachelor\u2019s.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Debt &amp; Financial Aid<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your earnings may be in your favor, but consider the cost of attending grad school, and any earnings you may be forfeiting if you don\u2019t work while you\u2019re enrolled. Many students take out loans,  <a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/programs\/coe\/indicator\/tub\">60% of master&#8217;s students in 2016<\/a> had federal student loan debt, with an average loan balance of $66K. In many cases, students are coming to grad programs with loans from their undergrad institutions already in tow, compounding the cost. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/pubs2021\/2021476_Summary.pdf\">National Center for Education Statistics<\/a>, 58% of grad students receive some form of financial aid from their institution, while 26% receive grants averaging $10,400 per student, and 3% of grad students get assistantships or another type of fellowship that contributes to their cost of attendance, all of which they\u2019re eligible to receive simply by filling out the FAFSA, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/advisor\/student-loans\/what-is-the-fafsa\/\">Free Application for Federal Student Aid<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from scholarships, grants, and other aid, there\u2019s always the option to find a program that allows you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emerson.edu\/majors-programs\/graduate-programs\">complete your degree while working<\/a>, too. Before you decide to make the leap, check with your current employer about the potential for funding opportunities. In addition to their work with Emerson\u2019s exceptional faculty and staff, <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.emerson.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/Files\/StudentLife\/Class%20of%202020%20FDS%20%28G%29.pdf?_ga=2.249653702.1101171457.1641917481-532590412.1629913163\">6 out of 10 Class of 2020 Emerson grad students completed an internship<\/a>, and on average they completed 2 internships during their time at Emerson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your connections stick with you, even after grad school. Emerson&#8217;s graduating class of 2020 reported 43% <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.emerson.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/Files\/StudentLife\/Class%20of%202020%20FDS%20%28G%29.pdf?_ga=2.249653702.1101171457.1641917481-532590412.1629913163\">found employment via networking<\/a> and 26% were employed through referrals. When you\u2019re looking to break into an industry, <em>who<\/em> you know can be just as important as <em>what<\/em> you know. Here\u2019s where it gets tricky to put a value on the friendships and connections graduate school has to offer. In Grad school, you&#8217;ll find a community of similarly passionate peers to learn from and share new ideas with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>But back to our question: is grad school worth it? Simply put, grad school is all about what you make of it. Grad programs are designed to give students the opportunity to take part in an academic community. Students can work on a specific project independently, relying on professors as mentors and knowledgeable resources, while also having the opportunity to work with peers and professionals in their field.
