In fact, a number of our graduate students choose to pursue their degrees remotely. Emerson offers <a href=\"https:\/\/emerson.edu\/majors-programs\/online-graduate-programs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>five graduate programs completely online<\/strong><\/a>, including our <a href=\"https:\/\/emerson.edu\/majors-programs\/graduate-programs\/digital-communic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Digital Communication Leadership<\/strong><\/a> MA and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/speech.emerson.edu\/?_ga=2.252395401.1633174386.1649964016-910112333.1642185396\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Communication Disorders<\/a> <\/strong>MS. Attending Emerson as an online student enhances educational accessibility, but the thought of pursuing a fully remote education can come with concerns about staying connected with peers, professors, and the broader school community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this blog post, we explore the online student experience at Emerson with Mary and Zaira, two currently remote students. Both students are enrolled in the <a href=\"https:\/\/emerson.edu\/majors-programs\/graduate-programs\/graduate-publishing-and-writing-ma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Publishing and W<\/strong><\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/grad-life\/2024\/01\/02\/answers-to-your-questions-about-emersons-writing-and-publishing-graduate-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">riting<\/a><\/strong> MA program, a residential, in-person program, that offers online course options for those unable to be in Boston right away.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through Mary and Zaira\u2019s experiences, we\u2019ll see how online students combat challenges, stay engaged, and utilize Emerson\u2019s resources to connect to the broader community. I worried that I would be limited to Zoom classes and nothing beyond that. Since beginning my graduate journey, I\u2019ve been able to join one of Emerson\u2019s literary magazines, attend completely virtual events or those with virtual options, and connect with other students both living in Boston and remotely. There are still some limitations, but starting [my graduate program] remotely has allowed me to save more money and better prepare for my eventual move to Boston. If I hadn\u2019t been able to do that, I wouldn\u2019t have been able to attend Emerson.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zaira:<\/strong> \u201cI was worried about missing out on being involved in activities and networking, but so far there have been many opportunities to network and be part of virtual events that have been very fun and interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-5011_7c813c-45 .kt-block-spacer{height:20px;}.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-5011_7c813c-45 .kt-divider{border-top-width:1px;height:1px;border-top-color:#eee;width:80%;border-top-style:solid;}<\/style>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-5011_7c813c-45\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><hr class=\"kt-divider\"\/><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">Engagement and Community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-virtue-primary-light-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-a988b3a1aea09ae41d26e4b0397478d0\">How do you stay engaged with classmates and professors?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mary:<\/strong> \u201cI stay engaged primarily through social media\u2014Instagram and LinkedIn, for example. I\u2019ve been able to form connections with others at Emerson outside the classroom through discovering similar interests, class group chats, and group\/partner projects. Also, if I notice we\u2019re part of the same organization, I\u2019ll sometimes chat with them about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zaira:<\/strong> \u201cMy main form of communication has been through email, especially with professors. I have been able to engage with my classmates through social media and other platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-virtue-primary-light-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-b59cacb2ea6ca959c0cc33a366272cb8\">Have virtual events or discussions helped you feel part of the community?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mary:<\/strong> \u201cThey have! I attended the ones I was able to last semester, and it was nice to see my peers attend as well. For example, I was really into going to coffee shops and cozy places to study with peers in undergrad, so not having that option currently has made motivation hard to come by.
