Here\u2019s a little-known Canvas feature: <\/span>Shared Content<\/span><\/a><\/span>. In fact, it\u2019s so obscure that it didn\u2019t make it onto ITG\u2019s radar until recently.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ooh, shiny! But what exactly does it do?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Shared Content allows you to share an<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Assignment<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Discussion<\/span><\/a>, Module<\/a>, <\/span>Page<\/span><\/a>, or <\/span>Quiz<\/span><\/a> directly with another instructor for them to look at and\/or use in their own course(s). Previously, the only way to do so required involving ITG. If you have <\/span>a lot<\/span><\/i> of course content or an entire course you\u2019d like to share, then contacting ITG to facilitate is still the best option. However, Shared Content makes it really quick and easy to do smaller shares here and there, cutting out the ITG middle-person.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what the process looks like:<\/span><\/p>\n

Sharing content<\/span><\/h2>\n

First, go to your course and click on Assignments, Discussions, Modules, Pages, or Quizzes on the left-hand side navigation menu. In this example, we\u2019re sharing an Assignment. Find the Assignment you want to share and click on the three vertical dots icon to the right of the Assignment title. Click <\/span>Send To…<\/b><\/p>\n

Type in the name of the person with whom you\u2019d like to share the assignment then click <\/span>Send<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

And there you have it! You\u2019ve just successfully shared an assignment with another instructor.<\/span><\/p>\n

Receiving content<\/span><\/h2>\n

Once someone has shared content with you, you\u2019ll see a blue notification dot next to the <\/span>Account<\/b> icon on the top left-hand side in Canvas. Click on <\/span>Account<\/b> then click <\/span>Shared Content<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There, you\u2019ll see all the content that has been shared with you. Click on the three vertical dots icon to the right of the Assignment and click <\/span>Preview<\/b> to see the contents of the Assignment. If you decide to copy this assignment into your course(s), click Import<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Input the name of the course(s) you\u2019d like to add the Assignment to then click <\/span>Import<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Voil\u00e0! The Assignment is in your course(s) under a new Assignment Group called <\/span>Imported Assignments<\/b>. From there, you can <\/span>move the Assignment to another Assignment Group<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>edit the Assignment<\/span><\/a> if you\u2019d like! Keep in mind that different types of content will import into different areas in your course. For example, a Page will go under <\/span>Pages<\/b> rather than <\/span>Assignments<\/b> and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n

A few limitations worth noting…<\/span><\/h2>\n

Announcements and Files can\u2019t be shared this way. The exception to that is any file that\u2019s linked within an Assignment, Discussion, Module, Page, or Quiz.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve shared content with someone else, you can\u2019t revoke access to that content easily nor does Canvas show you a list of what you\u2019ve shared and with whom you\u2019ve shared it. There is currently a <\/span>feature idea that proposes changing this<\/span><\/a> that you can upvote if interested!<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve received content that you\u2019d like to use, it\u2019s best to import that content into your course(s) as soon as possible. Shared Content \u201c<\/span>may be removed from your Received Content page after a period of time<\/span><\/a>\u201d so don\u2019t wait too long!<\/span><\/p>\n
