{"id":5580,"date":"2025-08-22T11:00:24","date_gmt":"2025-08-22T15:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/itg\/?p=5580"},"modified":"2025-08-27T09:27:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T13:27:09","slug":"whats-new-in-itg-this-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/itg\/whats-new-in-itg-this-fall\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s New in ITG This Fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a roundup of some new features in instructional technology at Emerson!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Canvas: <\/strong><strong>New Template\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The new template in Canvas has <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1nvS6euLKVvsWshXj9Q9avOS7hj1nRAwjeeN50-Hu9GY\/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.j7vhvis4qui6\">updated syllabus policies.<\/a> If you are importing from a past course, update your syllabus page to include the new policies.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a result of the updated class recording policy above, <strong>moving forward faculty will not be asked to collect signatures from students before recording<\/strong>. ITG removed the consent form from our template. You might still see it in your Canvas course if you imported content from a past course. The new policy states that faculty should announce to students whenever they are recording, but have no obligation to collect written consent.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"PageTitle lia-component-common-widget-page-title\"><strong><span id=\"link_6\" class=\"lia-link-navigation lia-link-disabled\">Canvas: Performance and Usability Upgrades for SpeedGrader<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most of the updates to the SpeedGrader happened in the background to improve performance and speed. They tweaked the UI a little too. In the past, the tool would pull data every\u00a0 24-48. It has a different interface, but the information is the same. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/t5\/Canvas-Basics-Guide\/What-is-Course-Analytics\/ta-p\/73\">read more about the analytics tool in the Canvas Community Page.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Canvas: New Files UI<\/strong> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Canvas updated its File interface and made changes to file organization and management. To do that click the Select All\u00a0checkbox [1]. To select files or folders individually, use the checkbox next to each file or folder[2]. Column headers can be clicked to sort files and folders [3]. To switch between the new and original Files page, click the\u00a0Switch to Old\/New Files Page\u00a0button [4]. To view the files landing page, click the\u00a0All My Files\u00a0button [5]. Bulk action options are available when files and\/or folders are selected [6].<\/figcaption><\/figure>The release doesn&#8217;t have all the features we&#8217;d like yet.\u00a0 We contacted Canvas support to report that at the moment there is still no way to download all files in a course, and Shift+Click doesn&#8217;t select a range of files between two points.<\/p>\n<h2>Canvas: New Discussion Sort Options are now live<\/h2>\n<p>Last summer Canvas updated the Discussions interface. After some feedback from community members, they made some changes to the sorting features.<\/p>\n<p>When creating or editing a discussion, instructors can configure the default view settings, including thread collapse\/expansion and sorting options for students, with the ability to lock these preferences if needed.\u00a0Additionally, the Sorting section of Discussions and Announcements is redesigned.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5584\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5584\" style=\"width: 887px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5584 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/itg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2025\/08\/Discussion-sorting-image-of-screen.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"887\" height=\"999\" srcset=\"https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/itg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2025\/08\/Discussion-sorting-image-of-screen.png 887w, https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/itg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2025\/08\/Discussion-sorting-image-of-screen-266x300.png 266w, https:\/\/websites.emerson.edu\/itg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2025\/08\/Discussion-sorting-image-of-screen-768x865.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 887px) 100vw, 887px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5584\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Instructors can configure the default discussion view by setting the default thread state [1] between expanded and collapsed and optionally locking it for students [2]. They can also define the default sort order [3] between oldest first and newest first and choose to lock it [4] if needed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Canvas and AI<\/h2>\n<div>Faculty have had some questions about a recent Chronicles of Higher Education story, and we want to confirm that <strong>Emerson data is not being fed to AI via Canvas<\/strong>.\u00a0 Our contract with Canvas says that &#8220;All information, data, results, plans, sketches, texts, files, links, images, photos, videos, audio files, notes, or other materials uploaded under Customer&#8217;s account in the Service remains the sole property of Customer, as between Instructure and Customer (Customer Content).&#8221; If there are decisions to be made about what features to turn on, ITG brings those decisions to the Faculty Library Technology Committee and asks for their guidance about how to involve faculty further.<\/div>\n<h2><strong>Panopto: <\/strong><strong>Save As in the Panopto Editor<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Users can now save copies of their videos directly within the Panopto editor. You may save different edited versions of your original recording in Panopto without having to create copies in advance. You can read more and see a demonstration in <a href=\"https:\/\/support.panopto.com\/s\/article\/How-to-use-Save-As-in-the-Editor\">How to use Save As in the Editor.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>LinkedIn Learning\/Skillshare<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Emerson College\u2019s Human Resources department began offering <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/learning-login\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LinkedIn Learning licenses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to all faculty, staff, and students earlier this summer! With that in mind, and with considerations to low usage of Skillshare, we\u2019ve elected not to renew our license.
