Staff Volunteer for MLK Day of Service

On January 22, Emerson College held its third annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, a campus-wide event honoring the legacies of King and other social justice leaders, educating the community about the importance of solidarity, and connecting Emersonians through service. The event, co-organized by the Office of Academic Engagement and Community Action and the Office of Off-Campus Student Services, included both on- and off-campus opportunities for service with nonprofits and schools.

Sixteen staff members participated in this year’s event, along with 38 students, 1 faculty member, and 1 community member. Helping to organize the projects was Emerson’s community partner, City Mission (CM).

The day was a huge success with volunteers making 43 scarves and 250 snack bags for people experiencing homelessness, 18 blankets for babies living with AIDS, 19 T-shirt tote bags, and 80 Valentine’s Day and spring greeting cards for the elderly.

“It made me really happy knowing that my efforts would (hopefully) put a smile on someone’s face,”said Ilse Damkoehler (Internationalization and Global Engagement). She added, “I’m already looking forward to getting involved next year.”

Matt Finn (Academic Affairs) commented, “Helping a great cause and coming together as staff, faculty, and students is a great thing!”
