Staff Recommend…
Looking for a book to read or a show to watch? Check out some staff recommendations:
Movies
I highly recommend the fascinating documentary The Painter and the Thief that just came out. You can watch it and support your local theater. Jaqi Holland (Lacerte Family WARC)
Music
I can’t stop listening to Fiona Apple’s new album, Fetch the Bolt Cutters. A real album for the moment. Tim Douglas (Academic Advising)
Theater
A couple of Emerson alumni are in Riot X. I watched the live show on Saturday. Their scenes are all on the Riot X website. Richelle Devereaux-Murray (Performing Arts)
The playwright Richard Nelson has written a play specifically for Zoom, What Do We Need to Talk About? It’s about one hour, and I highly recommend it. David Griffin (IGE)
ImprovBoston has improv shows every weekend and almost every weeknight streaming free on its website. I really look forward to the Friday and Saturday mainstage shows each week for a good laugh. Britt Locklin (OHRL)
TV
I’ve been watching all of the mid-2000s Battlestar Galactica series for free on the Roku (available through the NBC app and maybe also the SYFY app). It’s an oldie that I’d never gotten through, but it feels very pertinent right now, what with all of humanity defending itself from a mysterious and sometimes invisible enemy.
On Hulu, my husband and I have been watching The Great. It’s about Catherine the Great, but takes a LOT of liberties (they brand it as an “occasionally true” story). It is NOT something to watch with children around, but it’s a fun watch. Also on Hulu is Solar Opposites. Again, NOT FOR KIDS. It’s about a household of space aliens that escaped their dying home world and landed in the US. Hilarious antics ensue. Robin Chace (IT)
I’ve been watching The West Wing. Richelle Devereaux-Murray (Performing Arts)
Like Richelle, I’m rewatching The West Wing and listening to The West Wing Weekly podcast, which is just as brilliant. Jaqi Holland (Lacerte Family WARC)
I’ve been watching The Clone Wars, an animated Star Wars prequel series to Revenge of the Sith, on Disney+. It’s a weird show in that the air dates for the episodes were not chronological! So we have to use the internet to figure out the right order to watch it in. Iris O’Connor (Communications and Marketing)
Video Games
Animal Crossing! There is a dedicated Emerson Slack channel, #animal-crossing. A group of Emerson staff gathered recently on Korina Figueroa’s island of Plumaca. Jenn Stevens (ITG)
