Profile: Ryan Krodel
Ryan Krodel is the assistant registrar for transfer credits in the Registrar’s Office. In this role, he evaluates transfer credits for new incoming transfer students and dual enrollment courses for new incoming first-time students. He completes these evaluations by reviewing external course descriptions, submitted course syllabi, Emerson’s degree program requirements, and policies set by Academic Affairs, combined with his professional history of reviewing coursework.
Krodel reviews each transcript for admitted students to potentially award transfer credit toward “Perspective” requirements or General Electives. Sometimes certain courses need additional approval from department faculty in order to be transferred in toward a specific major or minor requirement; this process is managed through Krodel’s office as well.
Another of his responsibilities is the evaluation of coursework for current students who are looking to take classes off campus that are separate from the ProArts program, Global Pathways programs, and study abroad opportunities that the school offers.
Since Krodel started at Emerson almost two years ago, he has received about 1,300 individual course requests. Most students are looking to transfer credits received from coursework taken at local community colleges over the summer. He works closely with the Admission Office to review college transcripts for any admitted applicants as well as the Academic Advising Center if questions arise from current students about transfer credits. He also works with the academic department chairs for the approval of transfer credits toward major-specific courses.
After obtaining a Master of Arts in higher education administration from William James College, Krodel spent five years working in Admissions for the college’s graduate school of psychology. He also worked another five years in Admissions at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
While in these positions, he mostly focused on courses on the topics of clinical psychology, counseling psychology, pharmacy, nursing, and dental hygiene. This experience has prepared him to help Emerson students who are interested in enrolling in science-related courses that are not currently offered at the College.
When asked about his favorite things about working at Emerson, Krodel mentioned that he enjoys the uniqueness of the programs offered. He said, “Being given an opportunity to do this in a non-admission setting and do it in a more academic setting is very unique for someone with my experience, and Emerson kind of gave me the opportunity.” He explained further, “ It’s an organization that seems relatively amenable to making improvements when it comes to how processes work, which is very refreshing for me.”
Krodel is originally from a very small town in Connecticut, and he has lived in the New England area his whole life. He obtained an undergraduate degree from the University of Vermont. He currently lives in Natick, Massachusetts, with his wife and their two cats, Whiskey and Thunder.
Prior to COVID, Krodel enjoyed volunteering at the Ellen Gifford Cat Shelter, which rekindled his love for animals and led him to rescue his cats. In his free time, he plays video games from a variety of consoles—a hobby he has enjoyed since his teenage years. He enjoys playing Dungeons & Dragons with his close childhood friends. In the summertime, he and his family do quite a bit of traveling to upstate New York, especially the Finger Lakes region.
