Celebrating the Legendary Staff of Emerson: Part 1

Emerson College is fueled, in part, by the dedication and unwavering commitment of its staff. Among these pillars of the institution are Nestor Carranza, Anne Doyle, Thomas Doyle, and Anne Isakson, whose collective Emerson experience spans more than a century. Learn more about their Emerson journeys below.

Nestor Carranza, Manager of Custodial Services, Facilities Management

Nestor Carranza has been an integral part of the institution for nearly 35 years. His role involves overseeing cleaning operations at the Boston campus, managing a team of 16 employees directly employed by the College and coordinating with two cleaning companies that work seven days a week.

Carranza started at Emerson almost by accident, encouraged by a friend’s application. He joined as a custodian in April 1989. Over the years, he has grown within the custodial department, earning promotions and eventually becoming the manager of custodial services in 1993.

Carranza has witnessed significant technological advancements during his tenure, particularly in software for managing work orders. He noted that this software has streamlined operations and enhanced efficiency greatly.

Reflecting on his time at Emerson, Carranza’s favorite memory dates back to April 1991 or 1992 when a massive snowstorm surprised everyone, only to be followed by a rapid warm-up that cleared the snow within 72 hours—a testament to the unpredictable yet fascinating nature of New England weather.

One of the qualities that he finds unique and special about Emerson is its diversity, with people from various backgrounds coming together to create a rich and vibrant community.

Beyond his professional growth, Carranza’s journey at Emerson has also seen personal milestones, including starting a family. Throughout the years, he has remained inspired and motivated by his genuine enjoyment of working at Emerson.

Anne Doyle, Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs

Anne Doyle has worked at Emerson for an impressive 37-and-a half years. Her journey reflects not just a career but also a profound connection to Emerson’s ethos and community.

Starting in the summer of 1986, Doyle embarked on a path that would see her take on various roles and responsibilities within the academic realm. Her journey at Emerson began with a move to Boston and a desire for further education. Starting as an administrative assistant in Academic Support Services, Doyle’s career trajectory led her through roles in academic advising, culminating in her current position—a testament to her growth and expertise in academic affairs.

Throughout her offices in various locations, from 100 Beacon Street to Anson and 216 Tremont, Doyle has witnessed and adapted to the technological advancements that have shaped Emerson’s academic landscape. From humble systems to sophisticated platforms like Banner and Workday, technology has streamlined processes while enhancing the student experience.

Today, Doyle oversees critical areas like the Academic Advising Center and the Registrar’s Office, providing vital support to both students and faculty. When asked what the College means to her, her immediate response was “home” and “stability.” Over the years, she has seen Emerson evolve into a renowned institution while maintaining its focus on storytelling—a quality she finds unique and integral to its identity.

Reflecting on her favorite memories, Doyle recalled moments like meeting Glenn Frey from the Eagles, a special encounter that speaks to the connections Emerson fosters. She also reminisced about the camaraderie of a smaller Emerson, where personal interactions and shared experiences were commonplace.

Doyle’s journey at Emerson has been transformative. Her passion for ensuring a positive student experience remains unwavering, a driving force that keeps her inspired. As Emerson’s culture has evolved with its growth, her commitment to fostering community and supporting students has remained constant.
