It was a solution to the large amount of items that accumulated on campus at the end of each semester. Instead of letting these valuable items go to waste, Emerson Sustainability started to collect them for redistribution to donation partners. Many of these items are also stored over the summer for free distribution to Emerson students during move-in through <em>Griff&#8217;s Sustainable Living Program<\/em>. Items from fall semester move-out are given back to students for free during <em>Free Shop<\/em>. Check out the details of each of these programs below.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-6c531013 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Griff&#8217;s Gives Sustainable Move Out Program (April &#8211; May, December) <\/summary>\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>Overview&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emerson currently sends nearly 80 percent of our waste to the trash stream. To increase our waste diversion rate, Campus Services partners annually with departments across campus and with external organizations to divert as much end-of-semester waste as possible from the trash and give donations a new life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Donations from fall move-out are given back to student for free during our <em>Free Shop <\/em>semester kick-off shopping event. After Spring move-out, dorm specific items are donated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gradbag.org\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.gradbag.org\/\">Grad Bag<\/a>, used and unused bags will be donated to the <a href=\"https:\/\/susmade.com\/reborn\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/susmade.com\/reborn\">SUS Reborn Initiative<\/a>, books go to <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.mtwyouth.org\/?srsltid=AfmBOooJ_Kpyb6wT5xXFAyb1XSus7NCzIiT5oEOiI2haGMSaxsZxu-WZ\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/shop.mtwyouth.org\/?srsltid=AfmBOooJ_Kpyb6wT5xXFAyb1XSus7NCzIiT5oEOiI2haGMSaxsZxu-WZ\">More Than Words<\/a>, housewares and clothing are donated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwill.org\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodwill.org\/\">Goodwill<\/a>, and unopened food and toiletries will be donated to Emerson&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/emerson.edu\/departments\/student-success\/food-access-initiatives-and-supplemental-support#pantry\">Student Success Food Pantry<\/a>. Many of these items are also stored over the summer for free distribution to Emerson students during move-in through <em>Griff&#8217;s Sustainable Living Program<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><strong>Collection Locations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Piano Row: main lobby, outside laundry room<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 Boylston Place: main lobby&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Colonial: 5th floor lounge <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Little Building: storage space past the mail room on the right (open 9am &#8211; 8pm)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paramount: 6th floor lounge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Donations for Spring 2026 will be accepted during the following dates: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ALL locations are open <strong>4\/24 at 12pm &#8211; 5\/2 at 12pm<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ONLY the Little Building collection location is open <strong>5\/2 at 12pm &#8211; 5\/10 at 12pm<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><strong>Accepted Items<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Books<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clothing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unopened nonperishable food<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Housewares<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fridges, microwaves, and mattress toppers\u2014 <strong>only <\/strong>in LB<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><strong>Items NOT Accepted<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open food containers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wet towels and dirty linens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anything that cannot be donated (broken items, trash, torn linens, etc. \u2014&nbsp;if you wouldn\u2019t give it to a friend, please do not donate it!)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Underwear and socks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><strong>How to Donate Mini-Fridges &amp; Microwaves<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mini-fridges and microwaves cannot be left in rooms for donation. Please follow the instructions below instead: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Clean<\/strong> <strong>and\/or defrost<\/strong> your mini-fridge and\/or microwave<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can <strong>check out<\/strong> a hand truck in the Little Building storage area past the mailroom to help move your appliance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You <strong>must<\/strong> bring you appliance to the Little Building storage area past the mailroom for donation. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Little Building storage area hours:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>April 24: 12-8pm <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>April 25 &#8211; May 9: 9am-8pm <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>May 10: 9am-12pm&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Important info: <\/strong>If mini-fridges &amp; microwaves are left in residence hall rooms, students will be charged the usual housing fee for not completing the move-out checklist. Our goal is to ensure that you have the room essentials for a comfortable living environment while also contributing to reducing waste and encouraging the reuse of goods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><strong>Why Participate?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Get Free Room Essentials:<\/strong> Receive donated room items such as bedding, kitchenware, and storage solutions.
