From interviews in 2022, the Berkeley Beacon cites that student misuse is one factor of these issues. Another is that students are responsible for reporting broken machines, despite a shared feeling that it shouldn’t be their responsibility, if the people interviewed were aware that was something expected of them in the first place.

The past summer, however, Emerson rolled out both new machines and new payment methods. Replaced with the newest SpeedQueen models, machines are now all functional and tied to the SpeedQueen app. This laundry app consolidates both paying for laundry—no longer on a physical control box we used to tap our Emerson IDs to pay—and checking wait times—which is still accessible on the Emerson app.

Reporting issues is still students’ responsibility, however. If something is broken or not working, filling out a work order will let Facilities Management know they need to fix it—otherwise, they’ll likely miss the issue.

Each laundry room has posters up with instructions to use the machines, in addition to instructions to set up the SpeedQueen app. It’s pretty intuitive, although it did take me some time to set it up, but it’s incredibly convenient to have all laundry services—funds, available machines, and payments—in one place, now!

To access the SpeedQueen app, either download it from the QR code on posters in the laundry rooms or search up ‘laundry services’ in the Emerson website and follow the instructions. To access machine availability online, sign into the myEmerson website and click on laundry in the services section.

PS: Remember, washing your clothes on cold is a key sustainability strategy! The vast majority of a washer’s energy usage comes from heating water. Plus, cold washing is gentler on most materials, allowing you to keep the same clothing for longer!

By Katie Koenig For several years, students have complained about broken machines, long wait times, and water puddling on the floor of laundry rooms, among other things.
