LGBTQ+ History Month – Fall 2023

Dear Emersonians,

As we approach the end of October, we want to take a moment to reflect and acknowledge LGBTQ+ History Month.

Unlike many cultural and heritage months, LGBTQ+ History Month is not formally recognized by the U.S. government, nor is it celebrated globally. In the U.S. this particular month of learning about LGBTQ+ luminaries and their advocacy for human dignity and civil rights was suggested by a public high school teacher in Missouri.

In the United States and in many other countries, the month of October was chosen because of its alignment with National Coming Out Day, which began October 11, 1988 and marks the anniversaries of the First and Second Marches on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. Other days of importance intersecting the LGBTQ+, gender expansive, and nonbinary community also fall during October, including International Pronouns Day (third Wednesday of October), and Intersex Awareness Day (October 26). If these terms are new or unfamiliar, we encourage you to explore the resources offered in this email.

The pursuit and advocacy for fair and equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community continues today, at Emerson and in the world. To our LGBTQ+ students, staff, faculty, and community members, we support you, we thank you, we welcome you here, and we are committed to continuing to improve our living, learning, and working environments.
