Theatre in the Cloud – Report from the field by Tierra Bonser, ’12

Tierra BonserSince graduation I’ve moved around quite a bit! From Emerson I headed down to Sarasota, FL and spent some months working for the Asolo Repertory Theatre and freelancing as a dramaturg as well as co-ordinating a local area new play festival.  With a part-time in the box office at Asolo Repertory theatre I’ve had a chance to connect with the educational outreach director as well as the dramaturg/lit manager. Aside from that I worked as dramaturg for The Jobsite Theatre in Tampa on their production of Hay Fever.  I was also connected with the Sun Dance Theatre festival. Finally, I have been working with fellow Emersonian, Luke Palmer on an original rock musical that he’s developing called David Koresh Superstar.
From there I moved briefly to Washington, D.C. to intern under the literary department at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company. My time there, however, was cut short with another opportunity to travel to Paris for a few months. After that, I set my eyes on London and was accepted to attend Royal Central School of Speech and Drama under the MA Advanced Theatre Practice program starting this fall. I’ve been in touch with a number of people working in the UK and have recently taken an interest in a project called Theatre in the Cloud, which deals in the challenges, innovations and implications between theatre and live performance and the internet (cloud), live streaming and mobile interplay with performance. My hope is to develop some kind of performance that can be performed by actors who are all living in different cities. This next year on the MA program I intend to develop a project that can be taken to international theatre festivals and to secure a place for myself to work over the next 5 years in the UK. It will be a year of intense, furious and engrossing development.
