The Theatre Studies faculty, with diverse backgrounds in scholarship, academics, and performance, works with an organizing principle, “from evidence to action,” that expresses our commitment to a process that moves from collecting and analyzing evidence to creating action in the form of written and performed research.
We use a variety of approaches to collect and analyze various forms of evidence—documents, interviews, images, and objects, as well as play scripts. Our methodologies reflect the most current developments in theatre research while still respecting tried and true methods of the past. Approaches include: Critical Race and Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, Dramaturgy, Ethnography, Historiography, and Phenomenology. In addition to offering seminars using these methodologies, we integrate them throughout our curriculum.
Each of these approaches shares a commitment to exploring performances in their social, historical, and political contexts. The Theatre Studies faculty’s scholarship and creative activity are grounded in the belief that performance, from ancient Greek tragedies to the most post-modern performance art, is part of a vital process through which citizens shape their communities. The Theatre Studies faculty considers its members’ work as scholars and artists integral to that ongoing process.
Our own research as well as the program’s curriculum evolves around the following themes:
The tradition seen anew. Having thoroughly grounded our students in Western theatre history, theory, criticism, and canonical works of dramatic literature, we encourage them to re-imagine the classics from postcolonial, feminist, and queer perspectives.
An international perspective. The emphasis on the intersection of national identity, citizenship and performance is enhanced through exposure to a range of performance traditions, plays and politics.
New work and ways of working. In addition to a keen interest in the staging of new plays and other types of performance activity, students are encouraged to engage with most current theoretical models of conceptualizing identity and performance.
Faculty expertise as scholar/artists. Through careful mentoring, we encourage students to examine how theoretical ideas intersect with performances of the past and present.
~ The MA is designed for students interested in pursuing doctoral studies, teaching in secondary schools or junior colleges, or in strengthening their academic preparation for professions such as literary management and dramaturgy. The MA degree may be earned under a thesis program or a comprehensive exam program. Students planning to go on for a PhD are advised to pursue the MA with a thesis program. Both options require students to demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language. The thesis program requires a minimum of 30 semester hours of course work, including a maximum of 6 hours of thesis credit. The comprehensive exam program requires a minimum of 32 semester hours of course work.
~ The PhD prepares students for careers in teaching and research at the college and university levels and a variety of careers in the arts and related professions. The doctoral curriculum requires 66 semester hours beyond the Master’s degree (42 hours of course work and at least 24 dissertation credits). For students on assistantship, 9 hours per semester constitutes a full-time load. Students who are not funded and those on fellowship register for 12 hours per semester. After satisfactorily completing their coursework, students must pass comprehensive examinations (written and oral) to advance to candidacy and write the dissertation. The doctoral program in Theatre Studies requires that students—in addition to meeting all University requirements—demonstrate reading knowledge of at least one foreign language, complete an assignment in production dramaturgy, and complete at least one term of student teaching in a course with a web-assisted component.

The MA in Theatre & Performance integrates scholarship and performance practice within a dynamic and multi-disciplinary context. Our MA in Theatre offers an intensive program for students who wish to enter the field as literary managers and dramaturgs for regional theatres or continue their education in a PhD program. MA in Performance Studies with an emphasis on the ethnographic examination of vernacular culture. The department has faculty strengths in Africana studies, dance studies, ethnomusicology, folklore, performance ethnography, popular music studies, religious and ritual studies, theatre and media studies, and women’s and American studies.
Performance Studies is also in the midst of a five-year initiative designed to build inter-institutional research networks, increase visiting scholar and artist residency programs, and provide additional research and creative opportunities for faculty and students. Our graduates have received travel support for conference presentation and serve as assistants in the classroom and in our production programs. Current MA students are presenting papers at national conferences, working on an NSF-funded project to use performance as research to interrogate the effects of gender in STEM research and pedagogy, and conducting ethnographic and archival research in support of their MA thesis projects.

MA in Theatre, Theatre History and Dramaturgy:
This new two-year (with MA thesis) program permits students to develop and perfect their interpretative, critical and scholarly skills. MFA in Directing for the Theatre:
The Department of Theatre of the University of Ottawa offers the only bilingual Master of Fine Arts in Theatre (MFA) (Directing) in directing for the theatre in the country. During their two year course of study, our MFA students complete a rigorous practical and theoretical training as directors of repertoire. Our program also aims to cultivate our students’ sense of aesthetic diversity, exposing them to contrasting approaches to the director’s art, from traditional, text-based production to devised and postdramatic performance. MFA students have the opportunity to work alongside acclaimed professional directors. MFA students have served as assistant directors to such artists as Richard Rose and Peter Hinton and have taken master classes with internationally renowned directors as Denis Marleau, Alexander Marin, Jean-Marie Papapietro, Guy Sprung, and Nadia Ross.
