Creating Space to Create
Connecting & unifying Student Theatre across Emerson College
Working & Creating with each other
The Student Theatre Alliance at Emerson works with the leaders of each student organization to unify our shared mission of creating theatre and student opportunity,
We pride ourselves on recognizing student work and fostering an equitable space for all individuals – whether it be actors, designers, managers, directors, or another cohort that we haven’t discovered yet, we ensure everyone is safe, protected, and valued while working in Student Theatre.

A lot of people work on Student Theatre shows
Between the 7 individual organizations, we’ve got a lot of participation across the board. Here’s just a few quick stats:
Productions are backed by the support of STA Equity
simulates real world ENVIRONMENTS
We use a rulebook which is based on the LORT (League of Resident Theatres) agreement from the Actor’s Equity Association.
Standardized Contracts & agreements
Participation agreements and contracts are standardized across the board, so a Lighting Designer working with BlueJay will have the same contract with MTS.
accountability and safety
We have these agreements to ensure the safety and stability of productions and the personnel working on them. We work with Emerson College to facilitate adherence to these agreements, holding people accountable.
Auditions: Streamlined
Common Auditions is one of the largest programs of STA. All shows produced by member organizations participate in a general, open call to any student wishing to audition. We then facilitate the casting and callbacks, working with teams to cast their dream production.
One Audition
Performers audition once (or twice if they’re being considered for Plays & Musicals). Directors see everyone who auditions, then proceed to callbacks.
choreographed callbacks
We work with directors to ensure limited conflicts between callback sessions, so performers don’t have to worry about missing one callback over the other.
Bringing actors into the conversation
Casting for 10+ shows at once can never be easy. We bring the performer into the conversation in the event that we reach an impasse, giving the performer some input into the casting decision.
the seasons start with you
Before we even get to casting, STA is involved with the pitch processes for all member organizations. No more worrying about different deadlines – the STA Unified Pitch Timeline makes it easy to share your idea for a show.
Each Member Organization has two representatives on the STA Committee. Reach out to them below!
