Our Story, Our Mission, and Our Values
We started the Student Theatre Alliance because we noticed a clear disconnect in the student theatre community.
Student Theatre has always been a driving force behind Emerson’s campus life. It’s a place where people of any major can come together and create beautiful art. And the opportunities are seemingly endless: with 7 different organizations, many of them producing multiple shows per semester, there is always a show hiring for something or roles to fill. This many different organizations all working toward a similar goal of producing theatre, while amazing, can lead to an overwhelming experience for eager participants. Each Organization would accept pitches at different times, contribute different, fractured parts to Common Auds, and would use slightly different iterations of contracts. It made for a very challenging experience to participate.
Enter: The Student Theatre Alliance
In the Summer of 2023, the first group of Student Theatre Alliance representatives met to begin conceiving what this organization could look like. Hannah Nilsson, then Executive Director of Kidding Around, facilitated these first meetings, and we had one representative from each of the 7 organizations. We discussed what STA would do, how it would operate, and what representation could look like. Coming out of that summer we had our first Common Auditions produced by STA rather than one Organization, we began to unify contracts, and we started having regular meetings amongst the leaders of each Org. The first official Chair Election occurred in November of 2023, and Oliver Worner, then Production Manager of BlueJay Theater Collective was elected Chair of the STA. Under Oliver’s leadership STA’s constitution was written and ratified, Common Auditions policies and procedures were set, Contracts and Handbooks were unified and made consistent, and STA became solidified as a service organization.
Mission of STA
The mission of the Student Theatre Alliance at Emerson College shall be to unify the Student Theatre Organizations of Emerson College through community building and support. STA will work with these Organizations to ensure a safe, creative, and inclusive artistic environment in the Student Theatre community, as well as supporting the shared visions of these Organizations.
