Beating the Boston Heat
There is no denying that Boston’s prolonged winter seasons can be a drag. But, when we get into the later summer months, the city’s heat can be too much to handle, too. Thankfully, we are surrounded by an abundance of water as well as cultural and art institutions to keep us cool. Below are a few ideas to help you beat the heat this summer.
Visit a Museum
On a hot summer day, what would be better than visiting one of the many museums Boston has to offer? If you’re in an art mood, the Museum of Fine Arts has some of the most historical and famous paintings in the world. Beginning July 22, patrons can visit the new Tender Loving Care exhibit, which features recently acquired and never-before-seen contemporary art. If you’re looking for more modern art, check out the Institute of Contemporary Art. Through September 4, Simone Leigh’s debut US collection will be on display. And for a special summer adventure, hop on the ICA ferry to visit the Watershed, its seasonal museum in East Boston. And, by flashing your Emerson ID, staff members get free admission to both of these museums!
Catch a Movie
Boston is home to many independent movie theaters that show both independent and studio films. The Coolidge Corner Theatre is known for its monthly film series and late-night horror showings. Over the summer, it is also putting on three free screenings at the Rose Kennedy Greenway as part of its Science on Screen Series. The Brattle Theatre offers everything from foreign to cult screenings. Upcoming screenings include Gaslight, Jaws, and Ryuichi Sakamoto films.
See Some Live Music
No matter the season, there is never a shortage of live performances in Boston. Some of Emerson’s counterparts in the ProArts Consortium are presenting a variety of shows this summer. Berklee College of Music is offering free performances across the city and the New England Conservatory has a number of performances lined up throughout the season. Plus you can check out some local talent just a few steps from the Emerson campus at our UnCommon Stage on Boston Common.
Explore the Boston Harbor
Taking advantage of Boston’s beautiful harbor will surely keep your summer days breezy. Setting sail from the New England Aquarium, there are a number of sightseeing cruises that take you around the harbor, highlighting the beauty of Boston. If you are looking for more of an adventure, take a ferry to one of the Boston Harbor Islands. The Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park offers free programs throughout the summer, including Stewardship Saturdays, a volunteer program to help preserve the islands, and HarborFit, a free workout class in East Boston.
