Plenty of us use online news and media sites to curate our articles. Whether on the Apple News app or the New York Times subscription (here’s how to get one), there are lots of places available for Emerson students and staff alike to learn about current events. However, not all of them are easy to navigate for specific topics, especially for news surrounding the environment and climate change.
Here are some tips for finding the latest climate and environment news.
The Apple News app has an environment section available if you search for it, but mostly it comes up with the Science headline. The same goes for Google News. The New York Times offers a science section in the home page of the website, but if you hover over the tab in the sidebar, it offers two subsections, one of which is ‘Climate & Environment.’
Google is also a great resource for environmentally-focused news. Just searching ‘environmental news’ provides a series of websites curated just for that topic: the Environmental News Network (enn.com) has a massive database of recent articles published from a variety of sources—research journals, political newspaper sections, and more—all organized into different categories. It’s a great place to search exclusively for updates on environmental politics, wildlife and ecosystem research, global and local pollution, and even news on clean energy research and politics.
ENN is a website dedicated to informing and educating its readers about global environmental action. As its mission statement says,
“While in the past we were mainly aggregators of environmental news, ENN has become more than just a collection of content. It is rapidly becoming a collection of resources, teachers, experts and tools that provide objective information and knowledge about the increasingly complex field of environmental science.”
It’s a great resource to organize and search for specific kinds of news related to the environment, and a useful jumping-off point to discover more news sites and science journals, as many of the articles listed on the website are linked from other sources.
Another website dedicated to these topics is Carbon Brief, which is a UK-based publication dedicated to climate science and policy. They offer news, a daily newsletter, easy-to-understand explainers on technical topics, and a weekly feature called “This week in data,” which provides data-driven insights from various sources.
The BBC (bbc.com/news/science) also has a specific environmental section labeled ‘Science & Environment). Although focused on the UK, it offers articles summarizing a variety of topics: research into various impacts on the environment, green innovation and initiatives, and recent UN activities and publications surrounding climate change.
Check out these websites to learn more about recent climate policy and activism in the U.S. and around the globe, updates about Boston’s actions, and research and innovation combating climate change. Plus, Emerson’s Sustainability Instagram posts weekly Environmental News posts, for regular updates and summaries of interesting developments every week!
