The first of its kind, Emerson’s Digital Communication Leadership (DCL) graduate program helps students pursue leadership roles in their industry. Designed to help experienced professionals level up in their careers, the program helps fill in your gaps in industry knowledge. With targeted courses for upper-level communication and leadership skill development, our Digital Communication Leadership program supports students to transition into senior-level positions in their field. Today, we’re highlighting some careers you might pursue after completing our DCL program.
1. Digital Communication Manager
Graduates from our DCL program would be well-equipped for careers as Digital Communication Managers. Digital communication managers are in charge of digital content and branding of a company. They often oversee an organization’s marketing and sales teams. Day to day, a digital communication manager will help establish communication plans and make sure that digital content across the company follows those plans. This role focuses more on the whole picture of digital communication and less on the granular details. Plus, making an average of $76,000 per year in the US, digital communication managers receive solid compensation for their work.
DCL courses such as Project Management & Communication and Online Content Strategy help students build the leadership and management skills needed to be excellent digital communication managers. If you’re looking for a leadership position in the communication sphere, digital communication management might be the career for you.
2. Senior Marketing Manager
Another of many possible careers for DCL graduates is becoming a Senior Marketing Manager.
Senior marketing managers oversee the marketing team of a company. They work closely with the team to conduct market research, develop marketing strategies, and analyze the effectiveness of their marketing campaigns. A senior marketing manager also encourages the marketing team to remain creative and energized.
If the company has a digital communication manager, the senior marketing manager would work closely with them. Together, they would ensure the marketing team is following the company’s digital content branding and strategies.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, advertising, promotions, and marketing manager positions are expected to grow by 6% by 2032, which is faster than the average industry growth. So, if you’re hoping to become a senior marketing manager, there may be more job openings for you in the next few years. Plus, with an average salary of $157,000 per year, you would be very comfortable financially in a senior marketing position.
3. Director of Marketing and Communication
If you already have management experience and are looking for a step up, you might pursue a position as Director of Marketing and Communication. A director of marketing and communication oversees strategic marketing plans and communication projects and may lead cross-departmental collaborations. On average in the US, directors of marketing and communication make around $100,000 per year.
For this position, you’ll need a few years of industry experience and knowledge of advertising, branding, etc. Our DCL courses such as Cross-Platform Audience Strategy & Messaging and Project Management & Communication will help you round out your knowledge to be qualified as a director of marketing and communication. If you are interested in helping shape a company’s voice and brand strategy, a position as director of marketing and communication might be the job for you.
4. Content Strategy Leader
If you are more interested in working directly with employees, rather than overseeing large departments, you might be cut out to be a Content Strategy Leader. Content strategy leaders help develop a strategy for their team’s content development, then help the team enact that strategy. Content strategy leaders work with the big picture but also get to be hands-on with content creation. For example, if a content strategy leader is on a social media team, they would help develop branding strategies. Then, they would help their team design the respective social media posts that align with those strategies. On average in the US, content strategists make about $93,000 per year.
With your content design experience and DCL courses building your strategic planning and leadership skills, you will have all the tools to pursue a content strategy leader position.
5. Senior UX Content Strategist
In the same vein of content strategy, students from our DCL program could pursue careers as Senior UX Content Strategists. Similarly to a content strategy leader, a senior UX content strategist will organize and help produce content. The main difference between these roles is that a senior UX content strategist pays special attention to user experiences. On average, senior UX content strategists make about $93,000 per year in the States.
If you have an interest in user design and audience experience, you might pursue a career as a senior UX content strategist. With courses such as UX Design and Online Content Strategy, the DCL program will provide you with the knowledge you need to go after this senior-level position.
