Ever wonder where the excess food from the Dining Center ends up? Wonder no more! Rather than being discarded, unused food from the Emerson Dining Center is donated to Food for Free, a non-profit based in Massachusetts. This spring, we are thrilled to share that we’ve donated a remarkable 724 lbs of food to support their mission. That’s the equivalent of 630 meals!
Of these donations, 371 lbs consisted of proteins, 175 lbs of vegetables, and 178 lbs of starches.
Food For Free is dedicated to combating food insecurity locally. Teaming up with over 100 organizations, they annually provide nutritious meals to 150,000 individuals across Eastern Massachusetts.
Food For Free utilizes food rescue and transportation services to ensure year-round access to fresh produce through various food programs. Their direct service initiatives deliver food to vulnerable groups such as students and seniors, addressing immediate hunger and the long-term health impacts of food insecurity. This holistic approach not only minimizes food waste but also promotes community health and wellness.
The organization’s roots date back to 1981 when a group of friends recognized local meal programs struggling to meet demand. They began rescuing surplus fruits, vegetables, and bread destined for disposal and delivering them to meal programs, pantries, and shelters. Incorporated in 1983 and achieving 501(c)(3) status in 1985, Food For Free has since evolved into a leader in addressing food insecurity, admired for its efficiency and integrity.
Today, Food For Free continues to innovate and partner with donors, volunteers, and numerous organizations to expand access to healthy food and strengthen community food systems. Their vision encompasses a future where everyone in the community enjoys consistent access to fresh, healthy, and delicious food.
So next time you wonder about the fate of leftover food from the dining hall, think of Food For Free and our impactful partnership in creating sustainable food solutions for a better tomorrow.
