As we are reaching the end of the school year, many students are looking towards next fall and making choices that will determine where they will live for the next academic year.

Next week, students staying on-campus will be choosing where they will lay their head. This year also comes with a new surprise, as Emerson will be opening a new residence hall in Boylston Place, while also temporarily closing the Little Building for renovations. Through this transitions, some students will be choosing to live in an unknown while bringing in a new era within the Emerson community.

Over the last few weeks, students have been approved for housing through a variety of options. Students in their freshman or sophomore years at Emerson are guaranteed housing on campus, and students in their junior or senior years can apply to live on campus, with space determined by need and availability. Students can apply for either open housing or suite selection. In suite selection, students submit as a group to be approved to live with a group of 4, 5, 6, or 8 people of their choosing. In open housing, students can either apply on their own or with a specific roommate, but not the entire suite.
Now that those applications have been approved, we are heading into the decision process. Students will be able to decide the exact room they will call their home away from home.
Assistant Director of Housing Operations Kendra Stokes has supplied us with a overall explanation of the next step for all students, depending on their approved living situation.
“For students who completed a housing application and have a housing guarantee, the selection process will begin on April 11 and continue through April 21. Students will receive an email this Friday with their housing selection date and time.
When a student logs on during their selection time, they will be able to view all open housing options available to them. If a student has been selected to participate in suite selection, they will only be able to view suites that will accomodate their approved suite size (either groups of 4, 5, 6, or 8). Only one person from the suite needs to select the space, and it will automatically place the other approved students. If a student is doing Living Community or Thematic housing, they will only be able to see those specific floors.
Students participaing in open housing (also known as individual selection) will be able to view all spaces that are open at their given selection time. They will be able to sign up for any open room, but can only guarantee housing for their specific roommate, as opposed to the whole suite. All students will be able to select their exact space for the next year, regardless of their selection time.
All times are assigned randomly, and their assigned time gives them access for a 24 hour period. Students who do not make a selection within that 24 hour period will be placed in a living situation by the Housing Operations staff during the summer months.
Students who are unhappy after their selection will be able to apply for pre-term room changes over the summer.”
All of the living situations that Emerson has to offer have their own draws for each student, and no matter where your student ends up, it will be home.
