Join the Race to Zero Waste!

By Sustainability Coordinator Jacqui Moy

Each year, Emerson competes in the Campus Race to Zero Waste (CR2ZW), a friendly competition between colleges and universities to identify the leading institutions in waste diversion. For eight weeks from January to March, Emerson and other colleges will be submitting waste data including weekly recycling, compost, and trash weights. We love participating in CR2ZW because it not only encourages zero waste habits, but also allows us to identify where we can improve on waste! To raise awareness about waste reduction and diversion on our own campus, Sustainability staff host several events and challenges for the Emerson community throughout the competition.

Here are just some of the upcoming events — the full list is on our blog here

  • Lunch Film Screening
  • Office Recycling Competition
  • Weigh the Waste
  • Teach-In on Sustainability
  • Spring Break Photo Challenge
  • Clean Out Your Office Day
  • Upcycled Art Competition
  • Bright Lights Cinema Series: King Coal

This year, these internal programs are all part of our Scouts 4 Sustainability program! Over the next two months, all students, faculty, and staff will have the opportunity to participate in various events and challenges to earn points. Points will be awarded through the Scavos app. At the end of March, the participants with the most points overall will receive exciting prizes!

Here’s an overview of how to become a Scout 4 Sustainability on Scavos:

1. Download the Scavos App

2. Open the app and use the JGZV-NBHE

3. Start completing challenges under the “Missions” tab

To complete a challenge, just take a picture of you completing each challenge. Challenges can be found under the “Missions” tab. Don’t forget to invite fellow Emersonians under the “Invite” tab and check out what activity from your peers in the “Feed” and “Champs” tabs!

We can’t wait to see all of your completed challenge pictures! Make sure to check our Instagram @emersonsustainability and our blog page for the latest CR2ZW updates including zero waste resources and an event schedule! You can also find our informational boards around campus, including in the library!
