Fulbright Opportunities for Faculty & Staff
The Fulbright US Scholar Program is the largest fellowship program for US scholars. Over the years Emerson faculty have received Fulbright Scholar awards to travel to Austria, Cape Verde, Columbia, Ivory Coast, Japan, and Mexico. The program supports travel abroad typically for 3-6 months, but can be as long as 12 months, usually in collaboration with a host institution abroad. The application opens each year in the spring and applications are due in September. Dr. Tony Pinder, Vice Provost for Internationalization and Equity is Emerson’s Fulbright Liaison. Faculty are encouraged to schedule a meeting with him or members of his team in advance of an application.
The Fulbright Specialist Program funds short-term travel (2-6 weeks) at a host institution abroad in order to support the host institution with a special project. It does not support research. In the past, Emerson faculty have traveled to Israel on the Fulbright Specialist Program to lead a workshop. Applicants must first apply to the Specialist Roster. They are then eligible to be matched with a host institution. Sometimes applicants and host institutions discuss a project beforehand, and the host institution can select the applicant from the roster, but all applicants must go through the roster process. The program operates on a rolling deadline, with several roster cycles each year. Please contact Diana Potter in ORCS for more information about the Fulbright Specialist Program.
The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad provides short-term study and travel seminars abroad for U.S. educators in the social sciences and humanities for the purpose of improving their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. The Department of Education transfers funds through the State Department to Fulbright commissions in various countries to pay the costs associated with administering seminars. This partnership allows the program to use the services and expertise of binational organizations to plan and conduct seminars for U.S. educators. Travel is typically for four weeks during the summer. For 2025, the seminar for postsecondary educators is “Building Bridges Across the Aegean: Cultural Heritage and Sustainability Seminar in Greece and Türkiye” and will take place in June and July, 2025. The application deadline to participate in this seminar is January 7, 2025. Please contact Rebekah Dale, Associate Director, Education Abroad and Domestic Programs for more information about the Fulbright-Hays programs.
The Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program provides grants to support institutions in developing overseas projects in training, research, and curriculum development in modern foreign languages and area studies for teachers, students, and faculty engaged in a common endeavor. Projects may include short-term seminars, curriculum development, group research or study, or advanced intensive language programs. Projects must focus on one or more of the following geographic regions of the world: Africa, East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific, the Western Hemisphere (Central and South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean), Eastern and Central Europe and Eurasia, and the Near East. Applicants apply through their institution. The next application deadline is January 21, 2025. Please contact Rebekah Dale, Associate Director, Education Abroad and Domestic Programs for more information about the Fulbright-Hays programs, and Diana Potter in ORCS for information about an institutional submission through grants.gov.
The Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Program funds fellowships to faculty members who propose to conduct research abroad in non-Western modern foreign languages and area studies to improve their skill in languages and their knowledge of the culture of the people of these countries. Fellows conduct research abroad for periods of 3 to 12 months. Funds support travel expenses, a stipend for the fellow related to his or her academic year salary, and an allowance for research-related expenses such as books, tuition, affiliation fees, local travel, and other incidental expenses. Proposals focusing solely on Western Europe are not eligible. Applications are usually due in April. Please contact Rebekah Dale, Associate Director, Education Abroad and Domestic Programs for more information about the Fulbright-Hays programs.
Fulbright International Education Administrators Awards are fully funded opportunities for U.S. higher education administrators to participate intensive two-week seminars abroad to learn about other countries’ higher education systems. By participating in a Fulbright IEA seminar, administrators can build their institution’s capacity for international education, gain a cross-cultural perspective, and open doors to collaboration with colleagues and students throughout the world. Emerson administrators have applied to participate in seminars in Taiwan, Japan and India in the past. The next opportunities are 2-week seminars in France and Germany in October, 2025. The application deadline to participate in these seminars is February 3, 2025. Please contact Rebekah Dale, Associate Director, Education Abroad and Domestic Programs for more information about the Fulbright International Education Administrators Awards.
